250,000 FANS WATCH ONLINE SERIES OF INDEPENDENT UNDERWATER FANTASY FILMS
INDUSTRY FANS INCLUDE WETA WORKSHOP’S SIR RICHARD TAYLOR AND CASTLE’S JON HUERTAS
One month after release, a quarter a million of viewers have watched THE UNDERWATER REALM, a series of short films now available free to watch on YouTube and Vimeo.
“It’s been a real honour that so many people have enjoyed the films,” admits Director David M Reynolds. “To have some of those behind our favourite film and television shows enjoy them too has just made the team’s year.”
Created by a fully volunteer team, THE UNDERWATER REALM is arguably the most ambitious independent film project ever attempted. Taking in five different periods and set largely underwater, the films are designed as a teaser for feature film trilogy based around the myth of Atlantis. Despite the creation of a Spanish galleon, a Spitfire dogfight and a whole new underwater race, the shorts were made for less than half of the coffee budget for Peter Jackson’s THE HOBBIT. The project has been featured on the BBC, National Geographic and film making, diving and SF fan sites all over the world.
“At every stage, from funding to production, these films have only been possible thanks to the incredible support of our fans,” explains David. “Now we need their help to spread the word, and introduce the world to the beauty of the underwater realm. Let’s see if we can get to a million views.”
